The Ohlone people lived in the San Francisco Bay Area long before the Spanish established the pueblo of San Jose in 1777. San Jose was a small agricultural town for much of its history, and quietly went from New Spanish control to Mexican control to American control between the years of 1821 and 1846. The manufacturing industry in San Jose took off during and after World War II, and the area quickly became the center of the American high-tech industry.
Today, roughly one million people live in San Jose and more than 8.4 million people live in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The meteoric rise of the high-tech industry in and around the San Jose area has earned San Jose the nickname the “Capital of Silicon Valley.” Google, Apple, and IBM all have headquarters in the San Jose area.
